How to Successfully Get Your Man to Stop Eating Meat!

It is so easy to eat meat in today’s society because; quite frankly meat just doesn’t look like meat anymore. Instead of seeing a bloody dying animal we see a perfectly cut and seared piece of meat. By detaching ourselves from where our food comes from we enable ourselves to eat just about anything. But is this a good thing? I don’t think so. I’ve never been a save the animals type of girl, but, the things that are done to animals today are nothing short of disgusting. I have been vegetarian for as long as I can remember and mostly vegan (aside from the occasional raw goats cheese) for the past year.
This is what made last night so interesting. Cory (the boyfriend) wanted lamb chop for dinner. So, we went out to whole foods and bought a heaping pile of lamb flesh. We went home and I reluctantly cooked this dead carcass with my clean skillet, cut it with my clean knife, and filled my apartment with the stench of death. Upon the completion of this meal, I gave him his plate and nastily said, “Enjoy your heart attack on a plate.” He then continued to tell me that I was being unfair, and that he worked hard all day and DESERVED a steak. Regrettably, Cory knows little of which he does and does not “deserve.” I sat there while he ate that nasty animal. He must have worked his way through 12 oz before I lost my cool and started telling him how what he was doing was wrong. Cory has never been one to be affected by those slaughter videos but tonight was different. In the midst of his indulgence I went to my computer and started showing him images of baby lambs, videos of lambs playing, and finally videos of them getting shot in the head with a dead bolt gun. By the end of that 10 minutes he finally understood how that steak got there, now he doesn’t want to eat Mr. Dinner anymore, he wants him for a pet. Mission accomplished!
Most people would say that Cory’s meat obsession is not my problem, and that he is free to make his own decisions . Honestly, I entirely agree. I think that we are all entitled to make our own discussions, but that they should be informed decisions. Cory was ignorant to the sweet nature of lambs and the inhumane treatment they endure upon being slaughtered. And now he knows. So I will leave him to make his own decision. Lucky that decision is what I consider to be the right one.
My point here is that It is important for everyone to know what they are eating, and more importantly how that food got to their plate. Stereo typically, men are the most ignorant when it comes to meat eating. Like Cory, most men embody the mantra, “Out of sight, out of mind.” This simply will not do for me.
As educated women (and men) it is important for us to keep our families safe and informed. This is why I personally see nothing wrong with obnoxiously showing your boyfriend, husband, father, mother, or children what they are eating for breakfast.
So here is my comic and yet obnoxious list of methods to get your man to stop eating Bambie;
1. Place images of livestock around your kitchen. Cute baby cows, ducks, sheep, you name it.
2. Take them to a petting zoo so that they can interact with Mr. Dinner
3. Explain why it is bad for ones health to eat animal proteins.

This list could go on forever but, the pictures and youtube videos should be enough. Its time to be obnoxious and show our families what they are eating and how it is affecting others.

    I can’t totally agree with you Maren. I believe it is okay to eat meat from time to time but it depends on the circumstances regarding on how the meat got to your plate. Circumstances such as how the animal was treated prior to getting killed, the act of killing the animal, etc. Indigenous groups throughout the US hundreds of years ago ate meat and they had this strong connection with the animals and the land. They treated the animals they hunted with respect and tried to minimize the pain of death as much as possible.

    Of course, we don’t live 200 years ago, we live now but the same can be said today. I believe if you can find a farmer who treats and raises his cattle or hogs or chicken in a humane, respectable way, I don’t see why not?

    Hey Brian! Totally agreed, foragers/hunter gatherer communities have a strong connection with the land and their “food sources” THe meat they are eating is pure and healthy. It was caught by them, grew up on natural food sources itself and therefore has the ability to vitalize the systems of those eating it. But, sadly we are not in that situation right now. Animals are generally fed grain and antibiotics and are sick upon slaughter, leaving meat tainted, riddled with medication, and rotten. Today it is very hard to know where your meat is coming from and how it got on your plate. If you know where your food is coming from, kudos to you! But I don’t. And the meat in the commons is definitely not coming from anywhere good.

    yeah you are right. Most of us are definitely not in that situation. I generally feel hopeless at the commons when I have limited options.. very limited lol I might have to steal a couple of those tactics to sway my family members and make them realize the implications of what they eat and the costs that come along with it.

    On another note, I occasionally read your blog and its really great stuff! Very insightful. Kudos x 5
